Medical Foundation
The Science Behind The Treatment
The skin is thoroughly cleansed and a topical anaesthetic cream (LMX 5% lidocaine) is applied under occlusion for 60 minutes. After numbing, the skin is cleaned again. The fractional CO2 handpiece is calibrated to the appropriate depth and density for the patient's skin type and concerns. The handpiece is passed systematically across the treatment zones, treating 20–30% of the skin surface while leaving the surrounding 70–80% untreated (fractionated). The patient feels heat and a stinging sensation during treatment (the numbing reduces intensity significantly). Immediately after, a calming mask and cold compresses are applied. The skin will appear intensely red immediately after, similar to a moderate sunburn. Over the next 48 hours, the skin develops a dark bronzed appearance (microscopic scabs). These scabs shed naturally over days 4–7, revealing new, smoother skin underneath. Total procedure time: 60–90 minutes.

Pre & Post Procedure Guidelines
Pre-Treatment Steps
- • Avoid active retinoids and harsh exfoliants 3 days prior
- • Inform doctor of any active cold sores or medication
- • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin
Post-Treatment Guidelines
- • Apply prescribed petrolatum-based ointment (Aquaphor / Vaseline) generously to all treated areas every 2–3 hours for the first 5 days — the skin must not be allowed to dry out.
- • Cleanse gently with cool water and a mild cleanser twice daily — no rubbing or scrubbing.
- • Do not pick or peel the bronzed scabs — they will shed naturally by day 5–7.
- • Stay completely out of sun for 2 weeks post-treatment and apply SPF 50+ religiously from day 8 onwards.
- • No makeup for 7 days minimum.
- • Take prescribed antiviral medication (acyclovir) for the duration prescribed — fractional CO2 can reactivate herpes simplex in susceptible patients.
- • Return to clinic on day 3 and day 7 for dressing checks and progress monitoring.
